Spring arrives in March and so does Seedy Saturday, Powell River’s community seed exchange and garden fair. The Powell River Farmers’ Institute invites everyone to this family-friendly event promoting seed-saving, biodiversity and sustainable living. From 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday, March 12, the Arbutus Room at Powell River Recreation Complex will fill with seeds, green gardening products, and community information tables. For participants, it’s a great day to celebrate spring’s arrival through swapping and buying seed, books and magazines, exchanging information and attending gardening workshops. Eight workshops will be provided during the day on all aspects of gardening from creating an edible landscape to composting to attracting pollinators and learning how to save seeds. Beside seeds, local products like worm castings, organic fertilizers, mason bees and bee houses will be for sale. A silent auction full of gardening items donated by local businesses and individuals will run during the event. Children can have fun in the supervised activity corner. Visiting members of Canada World Youth from Vietnam and Canada will host a climate change awareness maze. This is a day for the whole family to enjoy while exploring the prospect of growing food and helping save seed heritage. Refreshments will be available for sale. General admission is $2 for the day with children under 12 admitted free. For more information readers can contact Kevin Wilson at 604.483.9052.
