Student stands out

Scholarship recognizes leadership potential

Brooks Secondary School student Taya Gable has been named winner of a scholarship to a leadership conference.

The Rotary Club of Powell River made the announcement on March 14. This year’s Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Conference will be held at Camp Jubilee in North Vancouver at the end of March.

Carol Brown, rotarian and local committee chair, said chosen students will be among more than 100 young people attending three annual RYLA conferences in District 5040 which covers two thirds of BC.

Aimed at developing the leadership potential of young men and women, the conference will feature many “thought-provoking” events including interactive leadership labs, “exciting” guest speakers and challenging mental and physical activities that will provide participants with a chance to excel among and with their peers. Topics will include decision making, critical thinking, communicating effectively, ethics and public service.

To be chosen, Brown said the candidates needed to show leadership potential and good citizenship characteristics, plus a strong desire to attend and benefit from the conference. Additionally, in their individual interviews, they needed to stand out from other applicants.
