Students run fills shelves

by Kyle Wells reporter@prpeak.com Brooks Secondary School students are organizing their second annual Jingle Jog and are asking the community to come out and help them support a good cause.

The run and walk takes place on Sunday, December 11 at Willingdon Beach. A five-kilometre walk will start at 9:30 am and then the run starts at 10 am.

All the money raised at the event and any food donation collected will go toward Powell River Action Centre Food Bank, which distributes food items to needy families and individuals in the Powell River area.

The run is organized by the students as part of their physical education course. They do everything from making posters to registrations to distributing water at the event. Last year’s event raised $1,300 for the food bank and the students hope to do even better this year.

“It’s the time of the year and there’s been shortages for the food bank for the past however many years,” said Conor Sketchley, grade 12. “It’s just nice to give back.”

“I like it because you’re giving back to everyone and everyone’s wanting to be there,” said Ceilidh Lazaroff, grade 12.

Registration for the run is $10 per person or $20 for a family. The run will go along Willingdon Beach trail to Laburnum Avenue, up to the road and then back along Willingdon Beach trail. The students said they have run the route and that it is fun and mostly flat.

All Brooks students are being encouraged to take part in the run. Students can pre-register at the school’s main office and anyone can register at Avid Fitness, 102-7373 Duncan Street, or online.
