Teacher needs boost for contest

Shostak in running for favourite educator
Chris Bolster

A teacher at Kelly Creek Community School is in the running for Canadian Family magazine’s ninth annual favourite teacher award, but he needs the community’s help to win.

Andrew Shostak teaches grades six and seven at the school and also serves as its acting principal. He was nominated for the magazine award and then chosen as a finalist by a panel of judges for his work that goes above and beyond.

The top three of 12 finalists will be awarded $2,500. Shostak said that if he wins he wants to use the money to purchase children’s rain gear, so Powell River’s wet winters do not deter Kelly Creek classes from being able to engage in outdoor education.

At the time of writing this, Shostak was in sixth place among his 12 competitors with over 2,000 votes. The contest runs until June 18.
