Time with dad and a fishing rod

Annual free fishing weekend draws families to Inland Lake

It’s an annual tradition that fathers and children look forward to, the Father’s Day weekend family fishing event.

Across BC over 50 events are taking place and in Powell River the free Family Fishing Weekend will take place at Inland Lake, Sunday, June 21.

The event encourages families to head to fresh water and spend time with dad. By providing equipment and advice, organizers make it as easy as possible to participate. And, for the event, there is no need to purchase a fishing licence.

“Whether you are learning together or spending a day enjoying a sport that you have enjoyed together for a long time, Family Fishing Weekend is a great way for the whole family to spend time together with dad,” said Michele Dusterhoft, president, Family Fishing Society of BC. “It brings novices and experts together to enjoy what the sport has to offer in a fun environment.”

The society hosts the events with volunteer community groups and celebrates the tradition of recreational fishing in BC. The provincial government, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation and the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans sponsor the weekend.

For Powell River, the BC Conservation Officer Service has teamed up with Powell River Outdoors and A&W Restaurants for the event from 10 am to 2 pm at Inland Lake.

“We designed Family Fishing Weekend to be as accessible as possible not only so people are able to enjoy the sport with friends and family but also to provide opportunities to learn about the fish, their environment and the importance of conservation,” said Brian Springinotic, CEO, Heritage Conservation Trust Foundation. “It reminds people that with enjoyment of the activity comes the need for responsible use, sustainable use, and stewardship of the resource to ensure many future generations will be enjoying fishing in our province.”

All participating communities and there events, together with fishing instructions and regulations, are available online. And, while the family fishing event is free, freshwater and tidal fishing regulations, including daily catch quotas, still apply and details are posted online or www.fishing.gov.bc.ca.
