Youth participate in national fitness day race

Cash prizes on the line for team event

If money could be won for having fun while getting fit, would that motivate youth to set aside electronic gizmos and bust a move with friends?

Powell River Youth Resource Centre is hoping it will as it offers participation in the Amazing National Fitness Day Race with $100 on the line for the winning team and other non-cash prizes too.

Any youth between 12 to 18 years of age is being invited to be part of a team of three to six members to complete a series of fun fitness-based challenges, all taking place on Thursday, September 27. Sportsmanship and teamwork will be valued alongside speed and skill.

“Form your own team, or just show up and join others to create a team,” said Tracy Tunstall, Youth Resource Centre coordinator. Activities may include, but not be restricted to, karate, hockey and zumba, she explained.

Running in conjunction with Canada’s National Fitness Day campaign, this event, which is funded through the Sogo Active initiative, is intended to address the inactivity crisis in Canada and challenge Powell River youth to get moving, try something different and have fun with fitness in usual and unusual ways, said Tunstall. “By trying something new, young people might be enticed to continue with an activity they might not have tried otherwise.”

Team check-in will take place at 5 pm at the youth centre, 4746 Joyce Avenue. Race begins at 6 pm and prizes will be awarded at 8 pm. For more information or to register, interested youth can contact Tunstall at 604.485.5845, or just pop by the centre any Monday, Wednesday or Thursday evening.
