Thanksgiving dinner has barely settled, but we may already be stocking up on Halloween candy “for the kids” and trolling the web for costume ideas.

Look, listen and learn. That’s the message being put forward for National Fire Prevention Week, running Oct. 7-13, with fire departments across Canada and the U.S. working to raise awareness about the dangers of fire and how to prevent it.

If I had to name three essential things that have kept me alive since I was a small child, in no particular order, they would be grilled cheese sandwiches, oxygen and music.
