Heritage society in Powell River announces home and garden awards

Recipients acknowledged for their efforts in 2020

Townsite Heritage Society recently acknowledged homeowners and gardeners for their hard work and dedication to the ongoing beautification and restoration of the heritage homes and gardens in the historic Powell River neighbourhood.

Originating in 1917 with a Garden Contest sponsored by the Powell River Company, the Home and Garden Awards help to encourage and recognize the efforts of keepers of extraordinary gardens and boulevards, according to a media release from Townsite Heritage Society. The tradition was revived by the society in 1992, with the addition of awards for outstanding homes.

“Lots of gardens looked great this year since many individuals turned to gardening as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and physical distancing restrictions; judges saw a fair bit of vegetable gardens, too,” stated Joëlle Sévigny, the society’s director of operations and public relations. “This year we’ve also added a new category for Most Colorful Gardens, which was inspired by all the beautiful array of colours throughout the Townsite this summer.”

The society stated that it is grateful to the proud homeowners who participate, keeping the arts and crafts heritage homes looking young and alive, and is excited to see so many restorations taking place. The whole community benefits from this gentle competition, according to the release.
