Accidents increase over weekend

Emergency crews respond to three separate incidents

Powell River’s first responders were busier than usual last weekend.

From the morning of Friday, May 9, to the afternoon of Saturday, May 10, emergency crews responded to three motor vehicle accidents.

The first accident happened south of town near the 8500 block of Highway 101, near Gaudet Road at approximately 8:15 am on May 9. Powell River RCMP constable Tim Kenning explained that a driver lost control of her Toyota Matrix while travelling south on the highway.

“The collision resulted in the vehicle being hung up on a concrete wall,” said Kenning.

The driver was taken to Powell River General Hospital for precautionary reasons. Alcohol has been ruled out as a potential contributing factor, he added.

Then just before noon on Saturday, police responded to a report of a vehicle that had flipped and landed on its side while travelling on Duck Lake Road near Haslam Lake. The driver of the white Jeep lost control of the vehicle, Kenning said. One of the three people in the vehicle was thrown out, he said, but only suffered minor injuries.

On Saturday afternoon, BC Hydro crews had to be called north of town after an SUV rolled over and knocked out a power pole. At approximately 3 pm May 10, on Highway 101 between Wildwood and Tla’amin (Sliammon) Nation, a Toyota Highlander, travelling north, left the road after its driver lost control. The vehicle collided with a power pole which closed the highway and knocked power out for residents north of town and Lund for several hours. “The driver was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons,” Kenning said. “Alcohol has been ruled out as a potential contributing factor.”
