Wet drive

Days of heavy rain combined with an extreme high tide made some motorists’ drive along Highway 101 a little more nerve-racking than usual, Wednesday, December 10.

In several locations along the highway south of town rainwater pooled on the road after culverts became inundated with runoff after three days of successive storms hit the BC West Coast.

In some cases, like those near Victory, Pine Tree and Reave roads, damaged or partially blocked drainage ditches were to blame for the backup, but drivers encountered the worst flooding at Myrtle Rocks where the king tide brought sea water up almost level to the edge of the road and blocked storm drainage.

King tides are extreme high tide events that occur usually twice per year when the moon is at its closest to the Earth.

Catch the bus

Spirit of the season has hit BC Transit—Santa Bus is on the streets again.

With a reindeer nose and reindeer antlers, it is the bus to catch. Rides are $0.25 per passenger and inside Santa will be handing out candy canes to customers.

Santa Bus runs on the regular schedule Friday, December 12, and Saturday, December 13, throughout Powell River.
