Health care awards

BC Health Care Awards celebrate successes and achievements in the province’s health care system. Nominations are being accepted until February 27.

The awards are given in 11 categories and include individuals who make a positive impact and inspire those around them, as well as projects that improve health care delivery.

“The BC Health Care Awards showcase just a few of the great things happening in our health care system, and offer thanks to individual employees and teams who are making a real difference in the lives of British Columbians,” said Terry Lake, health minister, in the Health Employers Association of BC media release.

More information and nomination forms can be found online. Anyone can submit a nomination form and health care employees here in Powell River can be nominated.

Awards will be presented in Vancouver on June 22.

Voucher system draws results

Powell River sports teams are now using a voucher system set up to provide free ferry fares for youth travelling to tournaments on the Lower Sunshine Coast and Lower Mainland.

Steve Hopkins, secretary treasurer of School District 47, reported to Powell River Board of Education trustees that the voucher system set up at the beginning of December had been responsible for approximately $350-worth of travel discounts over the winter break.

The next steps are to provide community sports groups, like hockey and gymnastics, blocks of vouchers to let them manage travel individually. Discussions are underway to extend the voucher system for travel to Vancouver Island.
