Fun around sand
Texada Island’s popular Sandcastle Weekend is celebrating 30 years this summer, with activities taking place on Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13.
“We’re hoping to be bigger and better this year,” said organizer Elayne Boloten. “More people, more fun, more sandcastles, more of everything.”
The focus of the weekend remains on the dozens of sculptors on Gillies Bay Beach as they battle for sandcastle supremacy, but there are plenty of other activities happening as well. Events kick off at 11 am on Saturday with a parade on Gillies Bay Road. A slow pitch tournament at the ball park serves up friendly competition overlooking the shores. Bed races at the tennis courts offer some comedic relief, and the popular lip-sync contest and moon bag ceremony at Shelter Point Park will once again be followed by a laser light show.
Children have plenty to keep them busy, including chalk drawing, a bouncy castle and water pistol fun at the RCMP station.
As for food, organizers have that covered too. “There’s a pancake breakfast on Sunday, a pork roast on Saturday, and a whole myriad of vendors with food and other arts and crafts,” said Boloten. And of course, there will be sand-sculpting. Members of the public are welcome to watch the creations take shape throughout the weekend, and even cast a ballot on their favourite between 12:30 and 2 pm on Sunday.
