Fishing for free

Inland Lake is the site of an annual fishing weekend in honour of Father’s Day.

Province-wide, fresh and saltwater fishing is free throughout the weekend, June 13 to June 15, when no licence is required and rods may be borrowed.

Andrew Anaka of the BC Conservation Officer Service, together with Powell River Outdoors (PRO) and A&W Restaurant, is hosting activities at Inland Lake from 10 am to 2 pm on Sunday, June 15.

“We have a couple of dozen fishing rods to give away,” said Anaka. “Kids are getting these. They just have to show up at 10 am and I will hand them out.” The rods are supplied by Go Fish BC, the Family Fishing Weekend sponsors.

He hopes many families attend. “Hopefully, they can come out and catch some fish. The fishing at Inland Lake has been excellent with lots of cutthroat trout being caught, up to 45 and 50 centimetres, so some really nice fish.”

A&W will provide hot dogs and there will be one for everyone who shows up. PRO will have fishing equipment giveaways.

“Gerry [Lister] and I will be there and will answer questions and be cooking and maybe give a little bear presentation,” Anaka added.

Come on down!

A woman who grew up in Powell River will be a contestant on an upcoming episode of the popular American game show, The Price is Right.

Ashley Devaney (née MacNiven), who now lives in Vancouver, travelled to Los Angeles with her mother Tracy Williams at the end of April to watch a taping of the game show hosted by Drew Carey.

Devaney was selected as a contestant and her show will be aired on television on Tuesday, June 17.
