Split games
It took double overtime to determine a winner in BC Hockey League’s series between Powell River Kings and Victoria Grizzlies Wednesday night.
Grizzlies were exuberant when Evan Richardson scored the unassisted winner at 4:27 of the second overtime period. Kings had to come back from a one-goal deficit three times in the contest. Defenceman Craig Dalrymple scored the Kings’ first goal to bring them even. Chad Niddery converted a penalty shot to tie the game again. Justin Bardardson’s marker brought the Kings back a third time and set the stage for overtime.
Kings were without team scoring leader Matt Garbowsky in the second game as he sustained an eye injury on Tuesday after he was high-sticked by an opponent.
Coming first in the coastal conference meant the Kings had a first-round bye, waiting 17 days while the other teams played for the right to advance.
Kings opened the seven-game series with a 6-2 victory on Tuesday night.
Andrew Pettitt had a strong game, setting up three goals. Niddery and Daniel Schuler pocketed a pair of goals each with singles from Cohen Adair and Dalrymple.
Kings outshot the Grizzlies 40-22.
The series resumes tonight (Friday) at Bear Mountain Arena for the first of two games in the capital city.
The teams return to Powell River for game five on Monday, March 14. If necessary, they are back to Victoria Tuesday for game six and in Powell River on Wednesday for game seven.
Meanwhile in the Coy Cup Senior Hockey Tournament in Prince Rupert, Powell River Regals won their first game Tuesday over the host city Prince Rupert Rampage.
They dropped their second game 4-1 to Williams Lake Stampeders.
Regals took on Kitimat Ice Demons Thursday night.
Fees increase
Property owners will be digging deeper into their pockets to pay water and sewer fees in 2011.

The second motion increased water fees by 10 per cent and gave early approval to the following capital projects: Townsite water main maintenance, $185,000; Wharf at Westview fire flow upgrade, $78,100; and water main replacement program, $50,000.
