Terminal opening

Upgrades to Powell River’s Westview terminal are complete and BC Ferries said its newest berth will be open for business next week.

Westview terminal has been closed since January 12 while a new loading ramp was constructed and the berth upgraded. The terminal will be open on Monday, March 10.

During the closure of both Westview and Little River terminals, the ferry corporation ran an alternative service between Saltery Bay and Vancouver Island with a water taxi service to Texada Island. Little River terminal was the first to reopen, having been closed for major construction from mid-January until early February.

With Westview terminal opening, the ferry service will go back to the regular schedule used before the closures. BC Ferries, however, notes on its website that service reductions, the result of the provincial government’s service review on all of the routes serving Powell River, will take effect April 1, 2014 and travellers should check the website for the new schedule.

Over the past week ferry crews have test docked vessels at the terminal and have undergone training with the berth’s new ramp system.

Kings up by two games

Heading to Nanaimo for games three and four of the first round of BC Hockey League playoffs, Powell River Kings have two victories in the best-of-seven series.

Kings scored three times in two games, which had different starts, against Nanaimo Clippers. They fell behind 2-0 in the Tuesday contest before scoring three straight goals. The first was an end-to-end rush by defenceman Cole Arcuri that had the crowd buzzing. Matt Scarth, returning from a long absence due to injury, scored the second goal and helped set up the winner by fan favourite Lucas Grayson. Kurt Keats collected a pair of assists.

Wednesday night, Ryan Scarfo scored just over a minute gone in the first period. Kings built up a 3-0 lead before Nanaimo got one back. Keats and Jarryd Leung were the other marksmen.

The two squads face off again tonight [Friday] and Saturday night at Frank Crane Arena. Depending on the outcome, the series will either be over or return to Powell River on Monday night. Game six if necessary will take place Tuesday in Nanaimo and a deciding game, should the series be tied up, will go Wednesday back at Hap Parker Arena.
