Fiscal fairness

Powell River Chamber of Commerce is asking the province to step up for coastal transportation and hoping the BC Chamber of Commerce will get behind the call.

At the annual general meeting and conference for the BC chamber, being held in Richmond this weekend, Powell River chamber is presenting a policy it hopes delegates will send forward to the ministry of transportation and infrastructure regarding BC Ferries and Fiscal Fairness for Coastal Communities.

“The time has come for the government of British Columbia to treat BC Ferries as part of BC’s essential transportation system, and part of the province’s economic growth strategy,” said Jack Barr, president of the Powell River chamber.

Powell River chamber authored this policy and at the AGM delegates from across BC will vote on the policy, among others put forward. The policy must receive two-thirds of votes to pass. If the policy passes, it will become official BC chamber policy, and the BC chamber will advocate it to appropriate tiers of government.

“The Powell River Chamber of Commerce is proud to take this policy forward to our peers from across the province,” said Barr. “Our chamber is committed to creating a more business-friendly Powell River and a more business-friendly BC. We think this policy will help achieve that and we hope it will get the needed votes from our peer chambers.”

The BC chamber’s AGM and conference is held in a different community each year. The event is the largest annual business policy-building forum in the province. Every year, member chambers develop and submit policies for the consideration of their peers. This year, 45 policies have been put forward and will be voted on at the AGM policy sessions.

Recycling

ElectroRecycle ambassadors will be at Lund Shellfish Festival this weekend with a mission to ensure every old and broken small appliance and power tool is recycled.

Jesse Langelier and Rebekka Schnitter will bring the province-wide program to Lund Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25, and be available to answer questions about how and where to recycle electronic goods that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

More information about ElectroRecycle is available on its website.
