Catalyst donates to library

Contribution made sense says company vice-president

Catalyst Paper Corporation has sent holiday cheer to Powell River Public Library.

The company donated $1,000 to the library earlier this month. Charlie Kregel, chief librarian, said it’s not every day unexpected funds arrive in the mail, but that it’s always a good day when that happens. Although the library receives most of its funds from City of Powell River and Powell River Regional District, “a very important component of our revenue is comprised of donations from generous individuals and businesses,” said Kregel. “We have many important projects that are simply beyond our financial means and this funding from Catalyst will enable us to advance the quality of our service to everyone in Powell River.”

Lyn Brown, vice-president of marketing and corporate responsibility at Catalyst, said, when thinking about how to support the Powell River community, a Catalyst contribution to the library just made sense. “The library in Powell River provides a vital service. We know that they provide an extensive and modern range of services today, but a substantial part of what they do continues to be lending books and magazines to the public. As a paper manufacturer there is excellent synergy between our mission and theirs and this is one small way to recognize the important work that they do.”

Kregel says he is not certain yet how the donation will be spent, but expects that it will involve improving some portion of the collections at the library.
