Free busing
Free busing service will be available on October 15, which is election day. The city is providing free transit for anyone to get to the polls. The announcement was made at the City of Powell River Council meeting on October 6.
Exemptions given
Permissive tax exemptions have been passed by city council. The permissive tax exemptions, for a number of not-for-profit community organizations, total nearly $400,000 in taxes forgiven for these organizations. Those organizations granted permissive tax exemptions will not have to pay 86 per cent of the city taxes that will be assessed in 2023.
At the August 25 finance committee meeting, city chief financial officer Mallory Denniston sought direction from council for the 2023 permissive tax exemptions.
Granted variance
City council granted a development variance permit to facilitate the construction of a two-building, 34-unit multi-family residential development on Fernwood Avenue. The development variance permit requested the relaxation of off-street parking requirements for the RM3 – medium density multiple family residential zone, from 51 to 45 spaces, to permit parking spaces to be located within front and side setbacks and to permit 29 per cent of all parking spaces to be allocated for small cars.
