In an interview with the Peak on Thursday, September 10, Powell River mayor Dave Formosa, on behalf of city council, expressed support for Tla’amin Nation in this time of crisis.

Formosa said he asks that local facilities treat first nations people no differently than anyone else.

“They would not be out and about if they were exposed,” said Formosa. “They would be quarantined. I just caution that everyone is accepted on an equal basis.”

Formosa said the city is there to provide support in whatever way it can.

“To the residents of Powell River, I want you to know that we work closely with the Tla’amin Nation and qathet Regional District through our joint emergency operations centre,” said Formosa. “Vancouver Coastal Health is currently working with the Tla’amin Nation on contact tracing the confirmed cases of COVID-19. As soon as it has released information on any possible points of public exposure, the city will assist the health authority in getting the information out to the public.

"I want to ask people to continue to be kind, caring and respectful during this very difficult time.”
