TAKE CARE: During the summer recreation season, people accessing the water around the qathet region’s dams are advised to exercise caution. The newly installed yellow debris boom on Powell River, for example, has underwater structures that are very dangerous.

Evolugen, which owns and operates two hydropower facilities in the qathet region, located on Lois Lake and Powell Lake, is urging caution around its facilities during the summer recreational season.

According to a media release, Evolugen recognizes that Lois and Powell lakes provide enjoyable recreation opportunities.

“Powell River is one of most beautiful places in the world to work and live,” stated Harvin Narayan, Evolugen senior manager, operations. “Our operations staff encourages everyone to take full advantage of the many recreation areas in and around town. We also ask everyone to be aware of the surroundings, especially near our hydro facilities.

“Conditions can change very quickly during operations. To ensure everyone’s safety, signs and other warning devices must be obeyed at all times.”

When people are out enjoying these destinations this summer, Evolugen advises them to play it safe when boating or swimming, by following some simple, common-sense safety precautions.

“Hydroelectric facilities and the areas nearby can be very dangerous for those unaware of the risks,” the release stated. “Some hazards are readily apparent, and some are not.”

People should stay well clear of generating facilities, including dams, water intake areas, discharge channels and all electrical and operating equipment, according to the release, and areas immediately upstream and downstream of generating facilities are particularly dangerous for boaters and swimmers.

“Hazards such as water flows may change quickly and without warning,” the release stated. “Our new bright yellow fabricated debris boom at Powell Lake dam has underwater structures that are very dangerous. Do not attempt to swim up to, around or beneath the debris boom.

“Respect fenced and gated areas and observe all posted signs. They are there to keep you and your family safe.”

To help people recreate safely, Evolugen recently uploaded a new website at powellriverenergy.com that provides daily levels for Lois and Powell lakes. The site also provides additional information for staying safe at the sites.

Evolugen’s Powell River operations consist of lake reservoirs, dams, generating facilities and power lines. The release stated that all together in Powell River, Evolugen generates 80 megawatts of capacity, which is equivalent to powering 34,500 homes annually.

“Our facilities have contributed to the prosperity of local communities, in many cases for generations, and we recognize the importance of maintaining this contribution,” the release stated. “In addition to working cooperatively on environment, health, safety and emergency response, we assist with local projects, provide recreational opportunities, and work closely with regional partners to make a positive impact that is aligned with both the needs of the local stakeholders and our business values.”
