Applies for solar grant
City of Powell River council approved the application for a federal infrastructure planning grant at its meeting on Thursday, December 15. The funding would go toward examining the feasibility of using solar panels at Powell River Airport and possibly expanding that to Powell River Recreation Complex. If approved, the grant would bring close to $7,000 and require the city to match with $1,950 from its community works reserve fund.

Adopts parking bylaw
Council adopted bylaw amendments to provide free parking at the city’s North Harbour for prepaid annual moorage purchasers and a $2 per person increase for airport travellers starting next month.

Supports brewery lounge expansion
Council voted to support Townsite Brewing’s application to BC Liquor Control and Licensing Branch for the addition of 35 seats inside its proposed expanded lounge. Council decided to opt out of leading the public consultation process on the development, leaving that to the province to handle.

Considers grassing Willingdon South
City staff have asked council to hold off making a decision to grass over the Willingdon South gravel lot until results of a broader study on Willingdon Beach Park can be completed next year. City director of parks, recreation and culture Ray Boogaards told the Tuesday, December 13, committee of the whole meeting that development on the city’s flagship park has been “very piecemeal,” and the city needs to have a vision for it. Boogaards said it could cost upwards of $20,000 to remove the gravel, replace it with soil and grow grass at the site.

Lights up holidays
City staff are recommending that council look at hosting a winter holiday tree lighting community event next December. City director of parks, recreation and culture Ray Boogaards told the committee of the whole that the event could include having the mayor and council serve hot chocolate and other snacks to community members and combining the outdoor event with ice skating or swimming.
