Council provides loan to development corporation
City of Powell River Councillor Chris McNaughton moved, at the council meeting Thursday, January 16, that the city provide assistance to Powell River Waterfront Development Corporation. The assistance is in accordance with the partnering agreement between the two parties by way of a guarantee of a loan in the amount of $1,803,000 for a term not to exceed five years. Councillor Russell Brewer voted against the motion, but it carried with the support of Mayor Dave Formosa and the five remaining councillors.
Service agreement renewals
Council agreed with a recommendation by the committee of the whole to provide Powell River Regional Economic Development Society with funding in the amount of $43,018.00 for the first quarter of 2014, based on funding equivalent to the 2013 service agreement and core funding levels for the same period of time. Council directed staff to enter into a new service agreement with the organization.
Council also provided Tourism Powell River with funding in the amount of $36,136 for the first quarter of 2014, based on funding equivalent to the terms of the 2011-2013 Tourism Powell River Agreement for the same period of time.
Support letter
Council agreed to send a letter to Vancouver Coastal Health to encourage reinstatement of five community developer positions recently cut by the authority. The request came from Janet Newbury and was forwarded to council by the committee of the whole, December 19, 2013. One of the five positions was held in Powell River and was closely connected to the farm-to-school program at James Thomson Elementary School.
Risk management
An increase in funding has been agreed to by council for the infrastructure risk management policy development project. An additional amount of $26,790 will be provided as follows: $20,443 from the 2013 Municipal Insurance Association grant and $6,347 transferred from the asset management planning project fund. Total funding for the policy development is $39,000.
