Green lights
Councillors voted to send a letter to BC Hydro agreeing with its proposal to replace all drop lens street lights with flat lens street lights as part of BC Hydro’s street light maintenance and repair programs within the city. Flat lens lights reduce light pollution and wasted energy.
Trails position
Councillors passed a motion to notify the Powell River Outdoor Recreation Users’ Group that at this time the city will not be establishing a trails outdoor recreation coordinator position.
Beach mural
Councillors approved a proposed first-nations-themed mural depicting whales and a raven to be painted by the artist Daniel Rafael on the backside of the Beach Hut at Willingdon Beach.
Municipal police
Councillors passed a motion to send a letter to BC Premier Christy Clark supporting the position of the District of Kent, which maintains that there is a provincial responsibility for policing services, particularly as rising police costs significantly impact the annual budgets of smaller municipalities. The letter also requests that the province adopt a police-funding model to assist smaller municipalities in BC in offsetting the costs of police services.
