Powell River youth interested in taking an active role in local government are invited to apply for the 2019/2020 term of City of Powell River Youth Council.

“It’s a great introduction to public service and the democratic process, and to becoming engaged citizens,” said mayor Dave Formosa.

Those between the ages of 13 and 19 can fill out an online application until Tuesday, September 10. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for interviews soon afterward. Membership is for a two-year term with sessions running from September 2019 to June 2020.

“Our youth council learn how local government works, how to create change at the municipal level and how to facilitate participatory decision-making in the community,” said city councillor CaroleAnn Leishman who, along with fellow councillor Rob Southcott, share the youth council portfolio. “This is a great volunteer opportunity to effect change that’s important to our citizen youth and all of Powell River,” she added.

In addition to attending monthly meetings, youth council members connect and work directly with the community, researching issues and providing input at council's committee of the whole and council meetings.

“The purpose of youth council is to educate and empower youth to provide meaningful input and to take action on local issues,” added Leishman.

Some of the successful past initiatives brought before city council by youth council include: banning the sale of bottled water at city facilities; new multi-bin recycling containers at Powell River Recreation Complex and other locations; gender-neutral signage on city washrooms and construction sites within the city where possible; free city bus passes to students who do not have access to school buses; and support for improved active transportation corridors and connectivity for cycling and pedestrians.

“Young people have unique perspectives as to how best to tackle challenges and opportunities to ensure that Powell River is a great place for teens and young adults,” said Leishman. “It’s a terrific chance for them to raise their issues and concerns.”

Meeting dates are once per month on a Wednesday from 4 to 6 pm.

“Youth council has given me so many amazing opportunities,” said 2018/2019 youth council member Kaylyn Gleave. “Not only have I made a difference in the community, but it has really helped me grow as a person.”

The first youth council meeting for the new term will be held the day after the application deadline on September 11 at 4 pm.
