Long service awards were handed out to three volunteer firefighters at Malaspina Volunteer Fire Department’s annual firefighter appreciation night held recently.
Fire chief Dave Keiver was presented with a 35-year service award and achieved a Fire Officer Level 3 designation in the fire officer certification program, administered in part by the Justice Institute of BC. “Level four is the highest level of achievement, that’s what I’m looking at,” Keiver said. “This piece of paper carries a lot of weight.”
Deputy Jim Wyatt was recognized for 30 years of service at both Malaspina and Innisfail, Alberta. Together, Wyatt and Keiver are among the longest running members in volunteer fire department service.
Jeff Pelat received his 20-year service award, after putting in time with Kelowna Fire Department, Lake Country and Malaspina.
Luke Desilets and Stephen Gueth were also presented with their Fire Officer Level 1 designations.
The firefighting squad at Malaspina currently stands at 26 members, “but,” said Keiver, “we are always looking for new recruits to join the team.”
Showing his continued care for the community, with daylight savings beginning March 9, Keiver reminded everyone now is a good time to change smoke alarm batteries.
