Dog mauls child near school

Offending canine still alive and moved out of city

City of Powell River Council members expressed concern that an attack on a child by a Rottweiler dog could happen again.

Mayor Dave Formosa, during council’s Thursday, October 16, committee of the whole meeting, outlined the recent attack, which he said occurred by Westview Elementary School.

He said a gate was accidentally left open and two dogs got into the playground.

“Children were playing a game called run and roll,” Formosa said. “One of the dogs played with the children happily and the other dog attacked the child that was in the process of running and rolling.

“He mauled [his] leg and, I believe, the upper body to the point of severe injuries,” he said. “The vice-principal, to her credit, I hear, leapt over the fence, dove on the child, cuddled and protected the child with her own body from the dog. The dog still tried to acquire the child and others came about to help.”

Formosa said the two dogs are no longer in the city so the city no longer has jurisdiction. City staff will send a letter to Powell River Regional District advising it of the dogs’ presence.
