UPDATED October 17 Alan Rebane has stepped out of the running for Powell River Regional District Electoral Area B director.
This leaves a repeat battle between incumbent Stan Gisborne and Area B resident Kim Barton-Bridges, which in 2011 resulted in Gisborne being re-elected to the seat.
Official campaigning begins this week with the nominations closed at 4 pm Friday, October 10, for candidates in Powell River’s upcoming civic elections.
On November 15, voters will go to the polls to elect six councillors for the City of Powell River, five Powell River Board of Education trustees and three directors for Powell River Regional District. They will not, however, be called upon to elect a mayor.
In a last-minute decision, Aaron Reid submitted papers to run against incumbent Mayor Dave Formosa. For the past six years, Reid has been a school trustee, and is running again as an incumbent.
Thanksgiving long weekend gave Reid time to think and she decided to withdraw her candidacy for the mayor’s job and concentrate on her school trustee campaign.
In a letter to the Peak, Reid said “My choice to file nomination papers for the mayor’s position was a very last-minute one on the afternoon of the deadline. I was very aware that if I didn’t file by 4 pm the option was gone. However, by filing the papers I had seven days to think hard about which direction I wanted to take.”
Thirteen candidates will run for the six positions on city council. Incumbent councillors Russell Brewer, Debbie Dee, Maggie Hathaway, Myrna Leishman and Jim Palm will run to keep their seats. Anita Adams, William Ashworth, Jim Baron, Dave Dickson, Carole Ann Leishman, Ron Ostensen, Karen Skadsheim and Rob Southcott are all looking to unseat them and form a new council. Elaine Teichgraber had submitted papers before deadline, but at 4 pm Friday, had withdrawn.
The board of education trustee race has incumbents Mary James, Jeanette Scott, Doug Skinner and Reid vying to hold their positions, while Cynthia Barnes, Kevin Dodd, Lauren Exter, Ashley Hull, Maureen Mason and Frank Schmidt are looking to be elected first-time school trustees. Ted Cooper, a past school board trustee, has also filed nomination papers.
In the regional district incumbents Patrick Brabazon and Merrick Anderson were uncontested for Electoral Areas A and E respectively. Area B director Stan Gisborne has competition from Alan Rebane and Kim Barton-Bridges. She ran against Gisborne in 2011, narrowly losing.
Area C Director Colin Palmer, who has served as regional district chair, will compete against Carlos Williams. Area D Director Dave Murphy has competition from Sandy McCormick, Tom Read and Bob Timms. Rose Darland is running for election in the Sechelt Indian Government District, and for Islands Trust Peter Johnston, Susan Morrison and Timothy Peterson have let their names stand.
Voters will decide on the successful candidates when they head to the polls in just under five weeks.
After further consideration, Aaron Reid has decided to withdraw from the race for the position of mayor for the City of Powell River. She will concentrate on winning a third term as School District 47 trustee. Incumbent Dave Formosa will return to the mayor's chair unopposed in the November 15 election.
