Freedom of information under review

Regional district takes a look at what is required

Powell River Regional District’s board of directors will consider what records are publicly available and what records require special written requests for release.

At a recent committee of the whole meeting, directors reviewed an extensive draft list of records available to the public with and without requests for access under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA).

The act allows the head of a public body to determine categories of records in its custody or under its control that are available to the public without a request under the act.

In reviewing the list of over 200 typical reports produced by the regional district, City of Powell River director Russell Brewer asked about audits and auditor reports, which are shown in the list as being subject to freedom of information requests.

“I’m wondering, do we not post those anyway?” Brewer asked.

Al Radke, the regional district’s chief administrative officer, said, “This would be the report where the literature is,” regarding the portion that would require a freedom of information request. “The numbers section does get reported.”

The regional district draft list is arranged alphabetically from accident reports to zoning.
