On this day:
In 1841, China ceded Hong Kong to Great Britain. China regained control of the island in 1997.

In 1936, Britain’s King George V died. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne 11 months later to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

In 1989, Hockey hall of famer Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins became the second player in NHL history to score 50 goals in fewer than 50 games. His 50th came in his 44th game of the season, a 7-3 loss at Winnipeg. Wayne Gretzky accomplished the feat in 39 games eight years earlier.

In 2009, Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States.
