At approximately 3:49 pm on Janaury 16, Powell River RCMP received a report of an Amazon telephone scam.

A resident received a phone call requesting that money be sent for an outstanding package. The resident advised that the caller ID indicated that the call came from the local RCMP detachment. The resident recognized it was a scam and immediately hung up the phone.

Powell River RCMP would like to warn residents that scammers use spoofing technology to hide their actual phone number and instead make it look like the call is coming from a legitimate phone number.

If anyone has received a phone call or email and are in doubt whether it is legitimate, call the local RCMP detachment at 604.485.6255 for assistance.

Anyone with information about the incident above, or any other crime, is asked to contact Powell River RCMP, or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS (8477) or online at bccrimestoppers.com.
