High winds cancel sailings

Environment Canada issues wind and snowfall warnings

A storm that brought high winds, rain and snow to much of the area on Wednesday, December 19, forced the cancellation of BC Ferries sailings between Powell River and Vancouver Island and Texada Island to Powell River.

The Queen of Burnaby didn’t leave Comox for Powell River until 7:15 pm. The North Island Princess was docked most of the day in Blubber Bay on Texada, sailing at 5 pm.

Over 800 BC Hydro customers in Powell River and on Texada were without power for a large part of the day. Hydro crews couldn’t travel to Texada because of the ferry cancellations.

BC Ferries cancelled 75 sailings, on 11 out of 25 routes, up and down the coast. A number of factors go into the decision to cancel sailings, including wind speed and direction, wave height and sea state. The company also considers vessel type, size and how much power it has.
