Lasqueti donation a surprise

Financial contribution music to directors ears

Lasqueti Island’s regional director has pledged a financial contribution to Powell River’s culture.

At the Powell River Regional District’s rural services committee meeting, Thursday, November 13, board members were reviewing a grant-in-aid request from Powell River Festival of the Performing Arts. The recommendation from the committee was to request the regional district include a $600 contribution to the festival in the 2015 budget.

The recommendation that came before the committee was for electoral areas A to D to split the grant-in-aid equally.

“I wouldn’t mind chipping into that either,” said Merrick Anderson, Area E Director.

Anderson said he wanted the recommended motion for the regional board to be for areas A to E, to be split evenly between the five regions.

The 2015 Powell River Festival of the Performing Arts will take place from February 21 through March 7, 2015. A resolution would be required to pay out the grant prior to the adoption of the regional district’s 2015-2019 financial plan.

The regional district has provided $600 a year to the festival of the performing arts from 2011 to 2014, and provided $550 in 2010. With the edition of funds from Area E, $750 will be contributed to the festival in 2015.

The festival has run in Powell River for 70 years. Professional adjudicators provide coaching and mentoring. The festival strives to encourage musical, dance and speech arts talents within the community to blossom and grow.
