Nominations open for elections

Candidates should be familiar with updates to act

Nomination packages for municipal election candidates are now available.

General election day in Powell River is Saturday, November 15, 2014.

City of Powell River voters will elect a mayor and six councillors to city council and five school trustees for School District 47 Board of Education.

“Anyone interested in running for mayor, councillor or school trustee is invited to come in and pick up a nomination package from the city clerk’s office in city hall,” Marie Claxton, chief election officer for the city, stated in a media release. Nomination packages are also available online on the city’s website.

In Powell River Regional District (PRRD) voters will elect five directors, one from each electoral area. The two municipal directors on the regional board are appointed by city council.

Nomination packages for anyone interested in running for regional district director can be picked up at the PRRD office (No. 202 – 4675 Marine Avenue), Brenda Paquin, chief election officer for the regional district stated on the PRRD’s website.  A fee is not required to be paid to pick up a package.

Any Canadian citizen who is eligible to vote in the province of BC is qualified to run for election as a board director, city councillor, mayor or school trustee. Candidates do not need to own property in the area, however, they must have resided in BC for six consecutive months and must be nominated by an elector of the jurisdiction for which they are seeking office.

The nomination period for municipal elections in both the city and regional district is open from 9 am on Tuesday, September 30 to 4 pm on October 10.

The term of office for municipal elected positions has changed from three to four years.

Along with the new term of office changes, substantial changes have been made to the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, said Claxton.

“Candidates will need to be familiar with and follow the new campaign financing and election advertising rules,” she added.
