Distracted driving

Powell River RCMP, in partnership with ICBC, wish to advise the public that the month of March has been designated for a distracted driving campaign throughout the province, where further traffic enforcement will be intensified in regard to distracted driving.

Distracted driving includes poor behaviours such as using an electronic device (cell phone) while driving, which is accompanied with a $368 fine under the BC Motor Vehicle Act regulations.

Some other examples of distracted driving can include, but are not limited to, the following:

Eating a full meal while driving

It is not uncommon for police to observe the public taking two hands off the steering wheel while driving to take a bite of foods such as hamburgers or sandwiches.

Having pets not secured in vehicles when in use

It is not uncommon for police to observe the public driving their vehicles with their pets unsecured, sitting on their laps.

Distracted driving is currently identified as one of the leading causes of motor vehicles accidents causing death. As a result, Powell River RCMP wish to remind the public to remain focused on our roadways and to be as responsible as they can be while driving.
