March 9; Extortion attempt
Powell River RCMP is warning the public about their online presence after a report was received about an extortion attempt. The investigation revealed that an unknown suspect demanded $2,000 from the victim in return for not releasing an explicit video of the victim. Police are reminding people that once something is shared online they have no control over what happens with the content. Think twice about sharing anything personal in nature online. This is especially true with anyone met strictly over the internet.

March 9: Fraud prevention
March is Fraud Prevention Month, so police are highlighting the continued reports they receive about cryptocurrency fraud. The most recent report came from an individual who lost approximately $90,000 to a fake investment company. The promise of high returns can be enticing but please remember, if it is too good to be true, it is. Anyone choosing to purchase any kind of cryptocurrency should use a major trading platform or online exchange. A quick google search can often identify scams, or have a look at the Better Business Bureau website. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website also contains up-to-date scams and some helpful tips to avoid becoming a victim.

March 3; Joyce Avenue, 4700 block
At approximately 9 am, police responded to a report of a break and enter to a business. Video surveillance captured five suspects, all in dark clothing, cutting a hole in the siding to gain entrance to the garden area, where they then stole approximately $3,000 worth of kids’ scooters. The investigation is continuing with the assistance of the Forensic Identification Section from Vancouver Island.
