Police Patrol: Powell River RCMP report

Incidents and occurrences in the past week include a stranded paddleboarder, theft from a vehicle, a grizzly bear encounter and a shots fired complaint

Powell River RCMP reported the following for April 20 to 26, 2022.

Total calls for service: 127
Thefts: 9
Impaired driving: 4
Break and enter: 3
Assaults: 3
Mischief: 2
Mental health: 7 

April 25; Powell Lake

A female was paddleboarding on Powell Lake and was caught in rough waters. She was unable to paddle to shore and attempted to swim. The female was cold and stranded due to high winds and called police for assistance. RCMP attended Mowat Bay with the police boat and rescued the female, who was taken by BC Ambulance to Powell River General Hospital for treatment.  

April 26; Cedar Street, 6300 block

At 3 pm, Powell River RCMP received a report of a theft from a motor vehicle. The owner of the vehicle reported that he had an unknown number of sports cards stolen from his vehicle overnight. The cards were estimated to be valued at $4,000 to $5,000.  

April 23; Inland Lake

At 9:14 am, Powell River RCMP members were called to assist a hiking group that had encountered a grizzly bear on the Inland Lake trail. The group managed to get to safety. Police were unable to locate the grizzly and BC Conservation Officers attended the area. Police remind the public to be bear aware in the backcountry and encourage looking for online resources to assist with education and preparing people for bear encounters. Online resources for education include wildsafebc.com and the Province of BC website has “Bear Smart” information under the environmental protection and sustainability section, with links to additional resources.  

April 23; Haslam Street

At 4:51 pm Powell River RCMP officers were dispatched to a shots fired complaint at the Inland Lake Forest Service Road and Haslam Street area. A female hiking with her dog in the backcountry heard two shots and yelled out to alert a shooter in the area that she was around. The female heard two more shots after yelling. She was concerned for her safety and returned back to her vehicle.  

April 22; Powell River Recreation Complex

Powell River RCMP would like to express gratitude to the community for its generosity and support attending the Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast hockey game. The game raised over $6,800 in support of Canadian Cancer Society pediatric cancer research and Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp located in Maple Ridge that provides medically-supervised summer camp experiences for children and youth with cancer. RCMP would also like to thank their partners at Powell River Fire Rescue for their support to make the fundraising event happen.
