April 4; Alberni Street
At approximately 7:30 pm, Powell River Fire Rescue responded to a couch fire in the alleyway behind the Salvation Army Thrift Store on Alberni Street. No one was injured, but the fire resulted in power being cut off to the entire block due to melted wires.

The investigation is ongoing. Powell River RCMP is requesting video surveillance from anyone in the area that may have captured the incident.

April 8; Thunder Bay Street
At 9:49 am, Powell River RCMP received a report that a large fir tree had come down on top of Thunder Bay Street at Beach Gardens Resort. Police responded and determined that two trees had been intentionally cut with a chainsaw.

The first tree had been felled back onto the Beach Gardens property. The second, larger fir tree had been partially cut and it appeared an attempt at a wedge cut had been made to fell the tree toward the interior of the lot. The cut, however, was incomplete and the tree fell onto the highway during the wind storm.

The tree narrowly missed a truck driving along the highway. The driver stated that it came down directly in front of the vehicle, missing the truck by about two feet.

No one was injured, however, this irresponsible and careless act put the public’s safety at significant risk. Police determined that no other trees in the area had been cut.

The highway was closed for approximately one hour during which traffic was rerouted up Cariboo Avenue with the assistance of Larsen Towing. The investigation is ongoing.
