As of October 1, Powell River Historical Museum and Archives is implementing a moratorium on new artifact acquisitions for a period of one year.

This temporary hold on artifact collecting is necessary for museum staff to begin an inventory of its current artifact collection, to process previously uncatalogued collections, and to begin reorganizing storage as well as office workspace, according to a media release from the museum. A moratorium is a temporary period of time in which the museum will not be accepting any items or object donations into the permanent collection.

“This moratorium only applies to artifacts and the museum still encourages the community to share and donate any archival items such as photographs, postcards, et cetera, that reflects the history of the qathet Regional District,” the release stated. “Please do not drop off or mail donations to the museum without consultation with staff.”

The one-year moratorium will not affect visitation or scheduled programs. Museum exhibits are still open to the public from 10 am to 3 pm Tuesday to Saturday for the community and visitors to learn about the regional district.

“We will also still be offering a variety of engaging programs for visitors and locals to participate in throughout this period,” the release stated. “We look forward to your donations once the collections moratorium is lifted.”
