Mayor Dave Formosa provided his weekly update to the community at the April 16 City of Powell River Council meeting.
Formosa said the provincial government has extended the COVID-19 state of emergency until April 28.
“Although there have been no new measures put in place by the provincial health officer, we urge people to continue to follow the physical distancing recommendations and to stay home whenever possible,” said Formosa.
He said the community received very unfortunate news that Paper Excellence has curtailed its operations in Powell River and Crofton until mid-summer, due to current market conditions, the malware incident, access to fibre and COVID-19.
“To the workers and their families, we want you to know we are thinking of you and praying for you in your time of hardship,” said Formosa. “I can tell you that as your mayor, and as your council, we have been in touch directly with your senior management at Paper Excellence and we are working with them to ensure the company survives these troubling times."
