Powell River paper mill to undergo curtailment later this month

Event is the result of weakness in the market and tight fibre supply in BC

Catalyst Powell River has announced a temporary 17-day curtailment of its paper operations in Powell River.

In a bulletin to employees dated Tuesday, July 9, Krista Cuddy, the Paper Excellence mill’s interim general manager, said she regrets to announce that paper machines 10 and 11 will be curtailed, beginning Saturday, July 20, through to Tuesday, August 6. Cuddy indicated that the mill’s steam plant will remain running to support power generation.

The curtailment is a result of continued weakness in the market and a tight fibre supply in the province, Cuddy stated.

She indicated that in conjunction with the sales force, Catalyst will continue to pursue opportunities to grow in more sustainable product lines and the company is actively studying strategic alternatives for the paper machines.

The bulletin indicated that the company will meet with the unions over the next few days to discuss the impact to the crews during the curtailment period.
