On February 14, Powell River RCMP received a report that a man at home on Selkirk Avenue was experiencing a mental health crisis.

Upon police arrival, the man was observed armed inside the home and was not cooperating with police, according to an RCMP media release on Thursday, February 15. Immediate neighbours were evacuated and ongoing communication was set up with Westview Elementary School.

Barricade de-escalation protocols were put into place and the Island District Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called out to attend. The school field was used in order for the RCMP helicopter, which was transporting ERT resources, to safely land.

The man eventually exited the residence and was safely apprehended by police.

There is no ongoing risk to the public, the release stated.
