Powell River RCMP staff sergeant Lee Dyson, the detachment commander, has released quarterly statistics for activity in qathet Regional District (qRD) electoral areas.
At the August qRD committee of the whole meeting, Dyson made an extensive presentation to regional directors, outlining many activities local police have undertaken from April to June of this year.
Calls for service increased slightly, from 373 in 2024 to 394 in 2025.
Checks for well-being dropped from 44 in 2024 to 40 in 2025. Mental Health Act calls also dropped, from 16 in 2024 to 12 in 2025. Dyson said it was a significant drop for the detachment.
There was a slight increase in missing persons during the quarter, from four in 2024 to six in 2025.
Overall persons crime increased 45 per cent, which Dyson termed fairly significant. There were 24 instances in 2024 and 35 in 2025. Assaults climbed from eight in 2024 to 13 in 2025.
Sex offences rose from one in 2024 to two in 2025.
There was an increase in harassment calls, from two in 2024 to six in 2025. Uttering threats climbed from 13 in 2024 to 14 in 2025.
There was a 14 per cent decrease in property crime, with 54 instances in 2024 and 46 in 2025.
Bike thefts were down from two in 2024 to one in 2025.
In the break and enter category, residential dropped from three to one, business increased from one to two and other decreased from one to zero when comparing 2024 to 2025.
Theft under $5,000 decreased by more than 50 per cent, with 13 in 2024 and six in 2025. In the theft from vehicles category, there were none in 2024 and seven in 2025. Dyson said four of the instances were reported over a 24-hour period on the same road.
Theft of vehicles increased from two in 2024 to five in 2025.
Frauds were static, with eight recorded in both 2024 and 2025.
Mischief dropped 33 per cent, from 24 in 2024 to 16 in 2025.
Drug offences went from one in 2024 to two in 2025. Drug trafficking increased from zero in 2024 to one in 2025.
Weapons offences increased from two in 2024 to three in 2025.
In terms of area distribution of calls for service, north went from 46 in 2024 to 50 in 2025; Tla’amin Nation dropped from 66 in 2024 to 60 in 2025; south increased from 141 in 2024 to 160 in 2025; Savary Island went from six in 2024 to 11 in 2025; Texada Island dropped from 85 in 2024 to 82 in 2025; and rural and on the water calls went from 24 in 2024 to 28 in 2025.
