At approximately 9:11 am on August 18, Powell River RCMP received a report of an attempted arson that took place at a business in the 4700 block of Joyce Avenue.

Police reviewed surveillance video footage, which showed a male placing a firework in a bush located right next to the building. The firework started to spark, causing the bush to start on fire, before eventually burning out.

Police were able to identify the suspect male from the surveillance video and he was arrested a short time later. The 52-year-old male from Courtenay was held for court and then released by a judge later in the day. He is on conditions not to be in Powell River, and will appear in court again at a later date.
