Less waste
Changes to the regional parks regulation bylaw to include the application for a special-use agreement zero-waste management plan were adopted at the qathet Regional District (qRD) board meeting on Thursday, July 25. The bylaw is a Let’s Talk Trash initiative aimed at encouraging less waste from single-use disposable items used during public events. Events that use qRD’s reusable dishware and cutlery further reduce carbon emissions associated with the production of single-use disposable items, as well as the transportation linked to bringing single-use items to Powell River and exporting them through the waste or recycling stream.

Approves application
The board approved a grant application to BC Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing for funds to offset the estimated $30,000 cost to complete a Myrtle Pond water system capacity assessment in 2020. If the actual study costs exceed the estimate, the Myrtle Pond water service shall be responsible for costs not covered by the grant.

Grant-in-aid
The regional board approved a grant-in-aid in the amount of $200 to Texada Ceramic and Sculpture Studio from the Electoral Area D grant-in-aid budget. The applicants had requested $2,703.90 for start-up costs for the studio, but there was $200 in uncommitted funds available in the 2019 Area D grant-in-aid budget.

Forest review
The board will write a letter to BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development and submit the views and concerns of qathet Regional District regarding the private managed forest land program review.

Wants meeting
The board concurred with the recommendation from committee of the whole to ratify that staff be authorized to request a meeting with BC’s minister of transportation and infrastructure at the 2019 Union of BC Municipalities convention in September regarding improved regional transportation.
