$10,000 cash prize

A young Powell River mother has won $10,000 in a national contest to find Canada’s craftiest family.

Elise Statham and her daughter Claire have been invited to CityLine studios in Toronto on Friday, May 2, to do a private taping for their mess-free painting craft. As well as a cheque for $10,000, the prize includes flights for Elise and three others, two nights’ accommodation in downtown Toronto and $600 spending money.

Elise said she would love to spend the money frivolously but it will likely “be saved or spent wisely.”

She submitted a video to show families how to do mess-free finger painting. Her video was selected as one of eight finalists in the contest which involved online voting that ended March 31.

“The digital media specialist who called me said that I won by a landslide,” Elise explained. She had encouraged friends and family in Powell River, Ontario where she was raised and elsewhere to vote for her and Claire on a daily basis.

Setting it straight

An article in last week’s Peak wrongly recorded the City of Powell River councillors who voted against a recommendation during the liquid waste management plan steering committee meeting. Councillors Russell Brewer and Myrna Leishman voted against the recommendation to forward the Stage 3 Liquid Waste Management Plan Draft 6 report submitted by Opus DaytonKnight Consultants, Ltd. to council.
