Powell River RCMP, in conjunction with BC SPCA, are investigating the discovery of the body of a dog found in Block Bay.

The dog, found underwater by some youths swimming in the area, is believed to be a neutered male pit bull, tan in colour. He was wearing a black Martindale collar (half choke chain and half material) with a piece of orange leash connected to it. A necropsy has been performed and the results are pending.

Police said it is evident that this act was done intentionally and they are asking for the public’s assistance.

Human remains

Powell River RCMP responded to a report of human remains having been found on Harwood Island, Sunday, July 29. Officers located the remains along the shoreline near the north end of the island. Police said identification has not yet been determined and the investigation is continuing with the assistance of the Coroners Service of British Columbia.


Snowflake melts

Catalyst Paper Corp-oration announced plans on Monday, July 30, to permanently close its Snowflake recycled newsprint mill in northeastern Arizona and its subsidiary, the Apache Railway Company.

A declining demand for newsprint, high transport costs and market pressures are cited as reasons for the decision.

Catalyst said it did not expect the closure to impact its other locations.
