Pineapple express hits

Riding the tail of a tropical storm that knocked out power and disrupted ferry service across the Strait of Georgia Monday and Tuesday, Powell River braces as another system is forecast to hit the area Wednesday, December 10.

John Ede, weather observer at Powell River airport, said Monday night’s storm brought unseasonably warm temperatures, 31.6 millimetres of rain and wind gusts up to almost 90 kilometres per hour.

BC Hydro crews worked Tuesday to restore power to residences around Lund, on Texada Island and in Westview.

Ferry sailings across the strait were cancelled not only on the Comox - Powell River and Powell River - Texada Island routes but also for sailings between Nanaimo and the BC mainland.

Environment Canada once again issued a wind warning for the Powell River area Tuesday, December 9, as another tropical storm bore down on the coast with more balmy temperatures, heavy rain and strong winds. Twenty to 30 millimetres was expected to fall on Powell River. The weather service warned of strong southeast winds hitting exposed coastal sections of eastern Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast. Wind warnings are issued when there is risk that damage to buildings may occur, the warning stated.
