Compensation could be available to homeowners, business owners, farm owners and charities affected by the recent flooding.

An information bulletin from the ministry of justice Saturday, December 13, states that Powell River is one of 31 communities listed as eligible for funds. Applicants must apply before March 12, 2015 and financial assistance will be calculated at 80 per cent of total eligible damage over $1,000 up to a maximum of $300,000 per accepted claim. A Disaster Financial Assistance application form is available online for uninsurable disaster-related losses.

Local governments are also eligible to apply for funding assistance related to flooding-related incidents over the past week.


Morning tremors

A 3.2-magnitude earthquake struck just south of Texada Island below the Strait of Georgia at 6:54 am, Thursday, December 11.

The quake originated about 17 kilometres west of Sechelt, and that was “lightly felt” in Powell River, Roberts Creek and on Salt Spring Island, according to Natural Resources Canada. There were no reports of damage.


Powell Lake TV

Recent filming on Powell Lake will be aired on UNIS French-language television, channel 912, this week. The channel is repeating the program at 5 am and 9:30 am Friday, December 19,  and 4 am Monday, December 22. Red Letter Films visited the float cabin home of Wayne and Margy Lutz in July to document remote living.
