Library shuffle

Sections of Powell River Public Library have been shuffled to accommodate repairs to its well-loved children’s room.

The library was closed for two days, December 10 and 11, after backed-up storm drains caused pooling runoff to flow into the children’s room, resulting in wet carpets throughout.

Terry Noreault, interim chief librarian, said the children’s books, which were not damaged by water, have been moved to the area adjacent to the circulation desk. The reference collection has been temporarily moved to storage and paperbacks and DVDs have been relocated throughout the facility.

The library remains open while the repair work is conducted and Noreault anticipates it will take several weeks to complete. He says staff appreciate the community’s patience while work is being done.

Roadside checks

With the holidays, Powell River RCMP are stepping up efforts to make sure that everyone makes it home safe.

Constable Tim Kenning from the Powell River detachment said the department has already begun its holiday season CounterAttack, an annual enforcement program which aims to take drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs off the road.

“The tragic losses that can result are completely preventable,” said Kenning. He added that the emergency first responders who attend these collisions see the “devastating impact” on people’s lives whether they are the drivers, passengers, family, friends or witnesses.

“If you’re planning to drink, plan ahead for a safe ride home,” he added. “Please drive carefully this holiday season.”
