Fatal accident

Timothy Yates, a 52-year-old resident of Powell River, died on the evening of Friday, December 2 after being struck by a vehicle on Nootka Street.

Powell River RCMP responded to the accident at about 6:25 pm. Yates, who lived in a nearby group home, had been struck by a vehicle while crossing Nootka near Joyce Avenue. Yates received serious injuries and died at the scene of the accident.

RCMP report that the accident is under investigation and alcohol is not believed to have been a factor. BC Coroner Service is assisting and a collision analyst from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

Hospital district budget

Powell River Regional Hospital District board of directors will consider allocating funds from the 2012 budget to go toward grants to community organizations.

Directors will consider funding a grant of $5,014 to Canadian Red Cross for the Powell River depot of the health equipment loan program. As well, directors endorsed a $75,000 equipment grant to Powell River General Hospital.

Any surplus from 2011 will be allocated to the reserve fund at the end of December. A 2012 provisional budget shows an anticipated $15,114 surplus for 2011, mainly because less funding was needed for the regional hospital district’s 40 per cent share of a chemistry analyzer.

Directors adopted the 2012 provisional budget at the November board meeting.
